I have been teaching at SPCC since 2004. I love interacting with students everyday and working with my peers. I also love playing and coaching basketball, playing baseball, and golfing. I love being spontaneous and riding the wave of life where it takes me. I am also very proud to have the best wife, duaghter, and a brand new edition on the way in September. My parents are a driving force in who I have become and throughout my life I have had the best friends around me who love me for who I am. God has guided me in many ways that have turned into miracles.

Habits Project

  1. Ok everyone it is time to start. If taken seriously, this project will be one of the most challenging you have ever tackled. Remember not only are we giving up a nagging bad habit but you must replace it with something healthy. If you do not fill in the free time you open nothing good will come out of these two weeks. For the past 4 days I have started a challenge of my own. I have given up all meat, any food with preservatives, breads and wheats, and all dairy except for yogurt. I am replacing it with all natural foods such as fruits, veggies, fish, and unsalted nuts. I also am going to amp up my work outs so I can increase my physical and mental fitness and also prepare for baseball season. So away we go. Good luck everyone. I hope we all support each other positively throughout these next two weeks. Your grade will start on April 27th and run to May 11th. If at the end of the two weeks you want to continue posting feel free.

  4. I am giving up wasting time and getting to school late. I don't really know what to replace it with... I'll probably just TRY to not waste time or get to school late. But it seems like if I try to put a new habit in instead of wasting time, I'll still be wasting time. Instead I'll just try to get my homework and other things I need to do done before I do anything else and I'll try to go to sleep earlier so that I can get to school on time.

  14. day 1 log 1 /Today was relatively easy. Must have been lucky. Only slight urges in class to teachers, but not at home. I have a feeling this will work. I feel like i can easily do it, but up until now i never actually TRIED to control it. Strange what you can do when you put your mind to it. I'm looking forward to these next 2 weeks.     Today is day 1 of the project. I did exactly as I posted(drew), execpt I didnt plan things out. I didnt know what I wanted to draw, so I wound up drawing in Math. today Iwill make sure I have something planned to draw for tomorrow.

  16. uhhhh day 1...today I didn't put my uniform away and i put my backpack in the middle of my bedroom....it is kinda messy and my candy from Easter is also on the floor...I don't have the time to organize a lot today because of dance. I need to make more time tomorrow. byeee <3

  18. Day 1 (April 27) Blog 1: I got to school early today. I got there at 8:30! I didn't waste any time in the morning and I didn't go to bed that late the night before. I don't really feel much different... I guess going to school early probably won't make me feel amazing. Hopefully I can keep it up though. I got my homework done now, so I'm all set. That's good. Yay!

  19. i started the silly-putty/clay thing today and, so far its working.....
    i started not biting my nails 2 weeks ago and now their so long i dont know what to do with them! i targeted my prime-time for my bad habbit and its... religon class or when we are revewing things in class
    so i got some clay and figured that if my hands are busy i wont want to bite my nails
    more tomorow... Adios!

    I had put my bag down when I got home but then I remembered something and backtracked, picked it up and put it in my room cause thats where I use it. So now I remember where I put it and I don't have to worry about misplacing it! YAY! Days not over still got a lot more replacing to do but i am proud of myself :D

  21. Day 1 (April 27) Blog 1: The track was closed today but I ran around the block a few times I think it was close to two miles. I ran about 7min and 20sec still have a way to go until i get back to my best time last year. and I didn't have any junk food at all.

  24. just ate healthy vegetable soup BUT it had turkey and it was my most favorite soup in the world so i ate it.but i ate now sodium and low carbohydrates, then i jogged for 30 minutes. but i also decided that im also giving up too much sugar and sweets and watching too much t.v. and replacing it with exercising and practicing piano =) <3

    As of 1:41pm today I had officially given up tic-tacs. I gave my last pack that I had with me to Matt J. I now only have one pack that will (supposed) to last me the next two weeks. People doubt I will be able to do this (maybe even me) but I will give it my best go to stay within my limit.

  27. Day 1:...Well when i came home i didn't go for a run but i did my homework right away. the junk food part isn't going so well. I just finished eating a chocolate bunny.i 'm going to have to try hard. Anyone out there can help me not eat the good candy in the house from easter and just in the cabinet. Thank you! <3

    Ok so today i came home and constrained myself from eating a lot of junk food and extraneous food, so i decided to work out and play basketball outside. Later on i came inside and i had 3 apples and 3 oranges and i had to eat what was for dinner but after that i went jogging for a bit and that helped burn the calories that i ate .... so ya day on was pretty good!!

  34. DAY 1 Blog 1; after i got home today after school i was hungry as usual. but today instead of eating cookies or icecream i had a cheesestick! it was good hahaha. and it kept me full until supper. then i ate supper. today went well and no junk food before supper was a sucess!

  35. Day 1: I haven't bitten my nails today! I had nail polish on them, so instead of biting them, I picked the nail polish off. That probably isn't good, but it's a start! I've also been chewing gum which has made me not want to bit my nails...kind of. Okay, I don't know if I did this right. Byeee(:

  42. Day 1 (April 27) Blog 1: Things did NOT turn out they way I wanted them to be. As soon as I got home due to force of habit, I logged onto my computer. Then made myself food and opened a coke. I set them next to the computer, and started doing it. Then left for karate which lasts for about an hour. So I was offline during that time. But now I am using USEFUL computer time to type this blog. (Yay for educational uses?) This is going to be hard for me. As for sleep? I have NO idea yet, I'll log that in the morning. Wish me luck, signing off, AND logging offline. Shawn :D

    Got home and I played ball with some friends. That was a good workout.. When I got inside I was hungry as usual so I ate some fried rice. I was tempted to have some unhealthy snacks but I didn't give in. I also havent used facebook.. Easier than i thought. But I know it's not going to be an easy 2 weeks

  47. Shawn Get off the comp. Lexi you can workout inside. Rachel D. make up different words that are not swears, might be funny too. So my first journal. I beat up so yard work for 2 hours than ran 2 miles. Either I am slow or Tristan is the fastest human on Earth because it took me 13 minutes, just kidding Tristan nice work. Nice great Bruins first period and as the game goes on I will do 30 minutes of pushups and my baseball EXERCISES(correct spelling). Successful day one and I realized this is the 7th day of my eating change. WEEEEEEEEEEEE. Have a good night everyone. GO to bed early, eat healthy, stop biting your nails, and be good.

  49. kk thanks ben and shawn your issue isnt an impulsive one that you do without thinking. you can put up a time lock on the computer. if you have a mac, then you can set it for a hour. it will log you off in an hour. on pcs it uses specififc daytime. even though u know the password, maybe u will think twice about what u r doin.

  53. Day 1 : today I woke up at 5am to exercise but I fell back asleep. I then woke back up at 6am and went back asleep for another 30minutes. I finally got up to excerise. I did about 10 minutes of bench presses in reps of 10.

    So today is Wednesday, which is the night I go to Karate, so I ended up eating McDonald's. I order everything large (which probably isn't the most healthy decision). This morning I did have ramen, but not my usual brand. It was whole wheat. Yuck! Didn't have any pho (if you don't know, pho is a rice noodle soup, much healthier than pasta and rice). The only healthy thing I ate today was an egg sandwich after school, but at least it's something.

    Today, first day, I was not successful in my endeavors to refrain from eatening out of boredom. Aftf swim practice, I was starving as I hadn't eaten anything since lunch and we had to do a hard fly set. Consequently, when I got home, I had a snack even though I'd be eating within the next few minutes. Anyways, we were having leftovers for dinner and apparently my turkey and mashed potatoes wasn't "enough" so I ended up eating a whole lot of Triscuits and now I'm stuffed (as always). I don't think playing video games or reading is going to help me achieve my goal, so next time I'm going to try chewing gun. However, we don't have any gun now...I'll have to get some...Anyways, it is about 9:00 now and I'm doing my homework. Hopefully I won't eat anything else!!!

    mostly stayed off the snacks today. had one slip up when i ate some popcorn. But other than that im good. I mostly played bball soccer, and did hw to replace that time. I actuall got hw done at 5, which i thought wasnt possible for me cuz im a slacker. But all the extra time helpd me finish real soon. Now im hungry again and i migh get some fruit out of the fridge. At least if i snck on that it is healthy. I LOVE GRAPES

    Today i dont think I bit my nails as much as normal. I think I bite my nails when I get bored or nervous during a test. I think I will try to study more for tests and tape my nails so I can bite them. I need to find something good to do instead of biting when bored. Any sugestions?

  66. I'm giving up 3 things.. I'm gonna try to stop bitting my nail & replacing it w/ a special nail polish or Fake nails? I'm not sure. Another thing is to Wake up as soon as my mom tells me,(she wakes me up at 6am & i acually "wake up" at 7:30" ) & i'm replacing that w/ Trying to wake up on Time. & Last i'm gonna stop yelling, because when we people reach that point of annoyance i start to yell & I'm gonna replace that w/ holding my face & breathing deeply & try to ignore them.

    Soo today I woke up like half an hour after my mom told me to, so that part of my bad habit was a fail, anyways, After i quickly ate a bowl of cereal, which i didnt enjoy, & took a shower, straightened my hair, & brushed my teeth :D then left to school. & surprisingly i did all that WITHOUT bitting my nails ! Success, YAY! But i did yell at someone in the morning before & after school (I couldnt help it! They were VERY annoying) but i didnt yell during school.. So i still need to work on that.

  71. Focus your energy on playing Matt. You didn't swear when I coached you during basketball. Baseball is a sport of failure. Remember 3 out of 10 your a great player that means you can fail 7 times out of 10 and be great. Always think of what next, what if the ball comes to me, and when your not playing how can I become better. Hope this helps. Woop woop! hahahahah love that.

  72. Log 1: First of all, I'm kind of annoyed with the fact that I'm up this early and that I have to write these... er.. 'logs' in the morning. Oh well, it makes more sense. Anyways.. I'm starting off with just a small bowl of fruit for breakfast. It might be like that for a few days and I know it's not much but it's still a startttt(: Yesterday I didn't get a stomach ache from a a bit of fruit.. so hopefully I won't get a stomach ache today!

    Today I knew exactly what i wanted to draw. so that kept me preoccupied until musical practice. i had accidentaly bit my nails without noticing. i guess i should put some kind of tape or something on my hands or something. but the drawing thing definitly worked. if anyone is doing nail biting, i would suggest drawing something you like. but overall, things went good for this project.

  78. Day 2: I bit my nails.. A LOT! During musical practice I was biting them and I didn't even realize it until afterward! :( I'm going to try something new now I think. I'm going to choose two nails to bite and not bite the rest of them. That way, if I absolutely HAVE to bite them, I can just bite those two nails. Hopefully I'll be able to bring it down to only one nail.. and then none! hahaha. hope this works(:

  80. Day 2- today I think I did good on the religon will find that out prob Monday! But attitude wise was a little harder today than yesterday I was a little mean in the car on my way home from school but at school I was really hyper and happy so that was a plus!! But the days not over yet so gonna continue this hyper/happiness I mean what ever keeps me motovated will distract me for being mean(: but I'm out hope every one had a good and eaiser day today than yesterday! bye bye<3

    Today I rarely bit my nails. I guess its because i barely had class. Although in musical practice when we werent doing anything, i did start to bit a little. once i noticed i stopped. Im going to try taping my nails, so if i start to, i will know imeadiately.I gotta find something else to do so i dont start biting. any sugestions?

  89. Harrison try something strange. Like some days I eat poptarts and yogurt for breakfast. Its always interesting. Try mixing things up some days. And yogurt always seems to make my breakfasts more interesting

  90. sam... if you rub your nails in nail polish remover the stuff stays on ur nails for a couple days and ive tasted it before its GROSS so when u go to bite and it taste nasty it might stop you from wanting to bite them hope this works!(:

  92. DAY 2: today was a long day. I dont think i swore too much. Actually I'm pretty sure I only did... twice maybe three times. I did good. I got a haircut and it looks good. People tell me I always look good though. I didnt like the duration of musical practice I was there for. I got too tired on myself. Going to bed early and definately not getting up for the wedding thing or whatever. THERE HOGGING THE NEWS CHANNELS!!! NOT COOL PRINCE DUDE NOT COOL! alright byee

  98. Hey y'all. I met Father Ubald today as well and saw some of you pop in. You should all try to go to the healing mass Wednesday at 6. I will be there I hear it is a really unique and amazing experience. He was a very nice man who has an amazing story to tell. So I just got home and am exhausted. You guys complaining about 3 hours of musical, well today I choreograph all 6 periods thanks to Mr. Coonan and his lack of choreographing skills. GROOVING. So I now have to find the motivation to work out. Going to eat and muster up some energy. And by the way who is Mr. bean.

    i haven't eating much today. I had french toast for breakfast. I didn't have a lunch today but Mimi gave me some pasta salad and Doritos. then i had Chicken with Mac & Cheese, mixed veggies, and mash potatoes. Day 2 Log 2~ I left my bag in the car today and I went crazy not knowing where it was but I finally found it... but I had put my softball bag where I remembered it would be so I am glad about that because I had lost my glove right before the first practice but it is all good now :) Pretty happy about what went on today! Musical is better especially R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Me and neka got it down ;) anyways any suggestions for remembering where to remember things??

  111. i had fun running today. my dog got lose up at holy cross so i had to run 2 football field to catch him.lol. I had to run under a fence and slide on the ground and run down a hill(well i should say slide on my belly). So the workout was fun. I didn't do good on the food again i had a WHOLE ROW of peeps. i feel fat. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE JUNK FOOD. and hey is ritz cracker a junk food????? I wasn't organized either. i left my key on the kitchen table so i was locked out of the house cause my mom was at work. so i tried to get in by the window but it was locked. Then i have a porch on the upper part of my house so i got a rope and tided it to the porch so i could climb but i was to scared. the i deiced to be creative and make a swing that was fun. But doesn't it figure that right when i made the swing my mom pulls into the drive way. o well i put my key in ,y backpack so i wont forget it tomorrow. well bye bye of to do homework!!!<<33

    Today was hard. I met Father Ubald and I was at the recpetion.. filled with snacks...unhealthy snacks. Well I didn't eat any and instead I had fruits and veggies -____- well I feel great right now. Gonna do some calve raises and pushups.. Ahhhh yeaaaaaah!!!

    I didn't have any junk food. Had a granola bar when I got hungary instead of usuall junk. I ran the first mile in 7:40 and the second one in 7:36 or the other way around. Total of 14:76 (Mr. Phillips.) thats all for today.

  115. Rachel try to organize places to put your stuff or keep watch of where you normally drop your stuff and find a new place to put it. For example if you put your backpack on the couch you could find a new place to put your backpack by the couch so you could remember where it is.

    Amy it is ok to have healthy sancks with sugar as long as it is natural sugar.if you're still on the chocolate and candy addiction try having your parents hide the candy someplace where you cant find it.

    If there is any other problems please post a comment. Friends and class mates are the best way to help stop a nasty habit. :-)

  118. Day 1 (April 27) Blog 1: :ast night, I went to bed later; I spent too much time on my ipod on the internet. Things did NOT turn out they way I wanted them to be AGAIN today. Yet again, I came home and went on the computer. I was SOO close into grabbing JUNK food. (Woo for self control? o:)I'm the one who does his homework all the time on the computer.     Well Day 2 was a FAIL. i ended up bitting my nails at the end of the day, & i got annoyed my people so i exploded & yelled &&&& i didnt wake up as soon as my mom told me too... Well i did but went down stairs & slept on the couch.. Soooo I still have to work on that.
    Alrightyyy Im out ! Sleeping "early" so i can wake up at 4am to watch the "ROYAL Wedding" ... ahah At least im gonna try to wake up at 4

  127. Tayshe it is hard enough to give up one habit, just pick the one that you really want to attack first. Also tel the royal family I said hi I will be sleeping hahahaha.

    Danso Rachel good idea with the jar but I would pick a fund that the money goes too. Maybe a charity of parents or something else close to you. Even it is a few dollars it will force you to put money in. I could help you get the money where you want it to go if you need the help.

  135. Day 2 (April 28) Blog 2: I was a little late to school today - earlier than usual and not too late - but still late. I got a reasonable amount of sleep, but I think I wasted time during breakfast. I think if I can keep myself focussed during breakfast, I'll be good. Also, I've added to my list of things: I'm going to try to eat oatmeal for breakfast everyday. It is (I guess) healthy and gives you a lot of energy (even though it tastes pretty bad)

    Today I was, technically, a good day for my attempts to stop eating out of boredom. Even though I was very hungry after swim practice, I was able to hold off eating anything until dinner (which I ate afew minutes after arrving home). Since then, I haven't eaten anything else, but that may be due to the fact that I wasn't bored tonight as I had a whole math worksheet to do and I'm tired so I want to get to bed early. However, I tried my idea of chewing gum which seems to have worked well enough; however, time will tell if chewing gum is an efficient way for me to stop eating out of boredom. If that doesn't work in the future, I will try brushing my teeth early. This idea may be effective as I am lazy and will not want to have to brush my teeth again after eating something (unless I'm actually hungry). Today was a sucess...Let's hope tomorrow is for me and all of you also.

    Okay so today wasn't as easy as I expected it to be. One reason for that was that more than half my friends ate around 3 bottles of tic-tacs in front of me throughout the entire day. They were also kind enough to offer me them about every 10 minutes-_- but I actually resisted from eating any of them. But since I do have one pack for the next two weeks, I had 5 of them today. That's good since that is about 10 times less than I would usually eat per day. So its going good so far. Peace Out peoples g-night

  149. figure it out online because witht he amount you burn during swimming you need to make sure your eating enough not to mention your doing this growing thing at age 14. Knowing may benefit you as you progress with swimming.

  152. Day 2: today I woke up at 7am then went right to exercising. First I did 5 minutes of treadmill, then I did 3.5 minutes of bench press, after that I did 1.5 minutes of pull ups, and finally I did a minute of push ups.

  153. Log 2: Today i spent around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours on the computer and to avoid it I cleaned up my room a little (even though its still really messy) and I did some of my laundry. The amount of time I spent on the computer isn't too bad but isn't great so i am trying to jst check my Facebook and then get off the computer.

    Today didn't go so well. I'm not eating ramen, but that's mostly because mom won't buy it. Other than that everything I eat is pretty unhealthy (popcorn, chips, coke) and I don't really pack a lunch for school. I guess my next goal should be to eat healthy foods. A fruit/vegetable a day might work.

  160. Good Luck everyone...Mr. Coonan has joined the project. I will be giving up snacking on unhealthy foods and will be replacing it with veggies, nuts(unsalted or sweetened), fruit ,and yogurt. Also, I will be giving up chewing sweetened gum and replacing that with sugar free gum...Won't be easy, but I'll give it a shot!!

Day3 Log3 so today i didnt have any junk food though i had a Dr. Pepper for dinner, but thats not that bad. my running time got even worse today so I looked it up on google. one site said that running every day stretches your muscels and can do more damage than good and to run every other day instead. If i start doing that ill brake the pattern but it might help with my time.

    Day 4: woke up at 6:45 and went to auburn ice-rink. first i went throught dunken doughnuts and got an ice coffee then went to the ice rink and skated for 2 hours

  170. Day 8...Today was difficult. Homework and studying didnt take too long but i had to do other chores around the house. I had dance from 5:30-8:30 and then i had to eat dinner. I couldnt make any time to clean my room and i have a lot of things out of place. I am going to try and put some stuff away in the morning but i dont know if that will actually happen....byeee :)

I was kind of forced to clean it today though because tomorrow morning the cleaning ladies come and the house has to be organized for them. I guess it kind of helps that they come so it makes me organize...

  173. Day 13. Today i kept my room clean and it is organized. I am going to try and keep it like this as long as possible and not throw things on the floor. It is really hard to break this but i feel like i am getting better. My room has been clean more than it has in the past. I think during the week it gets harder because i get home late from dance and i just want to eat supper and relax for the night. (usually doesnt happen)

  174. day 14. Last day! My room is still organized from yesterday. As soon as i got home from school i put my backpack away and my uniform away. I am doing laundry so clothes cant be on the floor. I am going to try and keep this going as much as possible.
